Who We Are

The Greek Language and Culture Community of Colchester ("Nostos Colchester") is a registered charity dedicated to celebrating, promoting, and preserving Greek language, culture, and heritage within Colchester and the wider Essex region. Established by local families who share a deep appreciation for Hellenic traditions, the organisation seeks to nurture a strong cultural presence and support the next generation in maintaining a connection to their roots. Through language learning, cultural events, educational activities, and community outreach, our community fosters meaningful relationships and encourages the exploration of Greek history, customs, and values. Whether participants are native speakers, heritage learners, or simply friends of Greek culture, Nostos Colchester provides a welcoming space to learn, celebrate, and grow as a community.

Our History

Nostos Colchester began its journey in 2021, when a small group of local families came together with the shared vision of creating a space where Greek language, culture, and traditions could flourish within the Colchester community. Initially established as an informal Community Group, it offered modest language activities and cultural gatherings that quickly resonated with families of Greek heritage as well as those simply interested in Hellenic culture.

Between 2021 and 2024, Nostos steadily expanded its activities, introducing structured Greek language classes, seasonal celebrations, and collaborative events with local organisations. Its reputation as a warm, inclusive, and community-driven initiative strengthened, attracting participants of diverse backgrounds and ages. By 2025, this organic growth created the foundation for a more formal and sustainable structure. Recognising the need to support its expanding programmes and long-term vision, Nostos Colchester transitioned from a community group into a registered charity. This milestone marked a new chapter: enabling wider educational outreach, fostering deeper cultural engagement, and ensuring that the preservation of Greek language and heritage would remain a thriving part of Colchester and the wider Essex region for years to come.

From its grassroots beginnings to its formal establishment as a charity, Nostos Colchester continues to embody its original spirit—community, connection, and a heartfelt celebration of Hellenic culture.

Aims and aspirations

The Greek School of Colchester is committed to promoting the Greek language, culture, traditions, and history through high-quality teaching, engaging lessons, and meaningful social activities. Guided by these principles, the school—through its Governing Committee—strives to provide a supportive and inspiring educational environment for all learners.

What the School Provides

Qualified native Greek-speaking teachers who bring expertise, cultural understanding, and passion to every lesson.

A continuously improving learning environment where pupils feel safe, motivated, and encouraged to develop their language skills.

Classes designed to meet the needs of individual pupils, taking into account age, ability, and level of Greek proficiency, within the resources available.

Clear and consistent communication with parents, offering updates on school matters, the academic calendar, and important events throughout the year.

Ongoing assessment of each pupil’s progress, ensuring that teaching methods support development and that learning targets are met across the academic year.

How Parents Support the School

The Greek School of Colchester greatly values and relies on the partnership it maintains with parents. Their support is essential to creating a successful and thriving learning community. Parents’ contributions include:

Ensuring children attend school regularly and on time, helping them maintain a steady learning routine.

Supporting pupils with homework at home, whenever possible, to reinforce their classroom learning.

Communicating any issues or concerns to the Governing Committee or teachers so they can be addressed promptly and effectively.

Helping maintain safety by dropping off and collecting children at the main gate only.

Participating in school celebrations and events, assisting with their organisation and attending them with their families whenever they can.

Through the shared commitment of teachers, pupils, and parents, the Greek School of Colchester continues to nurture linguistic proficiency, cultural identity, and a strong sense of community for all who take part.

School Committee

The School is governed by the School Committee. The Committee’s aims and objectives are to ensure the smooth and effective operation of the School, to support the teaching staff, to liaise with parents, and to organise or assist with school events, festivals, and fundraising activities. The Committee is the recognised body responsible for the School’s finances, overall strategy, and ongoing development. It meets regularly—at least twice per term—to carry out school business. All members are expected to attend meetings and take an active role in the running of the School, dedicating sufficient time to the responsibilities involved. Committee roles are voluntary, and no financial compensation is provided. The School Committee is composed of members of Nostos Colchester as well as parents of pupils attending the School. Parent Governors are elected every two years.
