About our Community

We are a registered charity dedicated to promoting and preserving the richness of Greek language and culture within the local and wider community. Our mission is to advance the education of the public in all aspects of Greek culture, traditions, language, history, and arts, fostering understanding and appreciation of Hellenic heritage. Based in Colchester, we provide a wide range of educational courses, cultural activities, and community events that bring people together through shared learning and celebration.

Our charity’s work is rooted in the belief that culture and language are bridges that connect people, strengthen communities, and nurture mutual respect. By offering opportunities to learn, participate, and celebrate together, we aim to keep Greek traditions alive and meaningful for future generations, while contributing to the cultural richness and inclusivity of Colchester and the wider United Kingdom.

Greek School
of Colchester

At the Greek Language and Culture Community of Colchester ("Nostos Colchester"), we believe that learning Greek is more than mastering vocabulary and grammar — it is a journey into one of the world’s oldest and richest civilizations, where history, philosophy, and art have shaped global culture. Our school offers comprehensive courses in Modern Greek for children, teenagers, and (soon!) adults, carefully tailored to each learner’s age, level, and individual goals.

Cultural
Workshops

At Nostos Colchester, our cultural workshops for children bring Greek traditions to life through fun, hands-on experiences. Young participants enjoy creative activities such as making their own lambáda (decorated Easter candle), crafting traditional ornaments, and exploring Greek customs in an engaging way. Alongside these workshops, children take part in music and dance classes, learning popular and regional Greek dances and songs that connect them to the rhythms and stories of Greece. Led by experienced teachers and musicians, these sessions nurture creativity, teamwork, and cultural pride — an important foundation for community cohesion.

Community Events

Nostos Colchester organises a vibrant programme of cultural events that bring the Greek spirit to life in the local community. Throughout the year, we celebrate traditional Greek festivals such as Christmas, New Year, Easter, and Greek Independence Day, featuring music, dance, food, and storytelling. These events offer an opportunity for families to connect, share traditions, and introduce Greek culture to the wider Colchester community. From festive performances by our students to community feasts and cultural exhibitions, every gathering reflects the warmth, joy, and hospitality of Greece. Nostos invites everyone to take part, learn, and celebrate Greek heritage together.

Greek Children's
Library of Essex

The Greek Children’s Library of Essex, proudly powered by Nostos Colchester in partnership with Essex Libraries, is a unique initiative dedicated to promoting Greek language and culture among young readers. The library offers a rich collection of children’s books in Greek, including fairy tales, educational stories, and contemporary literature, encouraging bilingualism and a love of reading. Through storytelling sessions, cultural events, and creative workshops, Nostos connects children with Greek heritage while welcoming families from all backgrounds. Located in the Colchester branch, the library stands as a joyful space where language, imagination, and community come together to celebrate the richness of Greek culture in Essex.
